Paddington Bear - Thomas Michael Bond
The Paddington Bear books have been a family favourite for many years and the children will certainly enjoy reading all about this loveable bear. They will show of their range of writing skills during story writing lessons, sequencing and retelling the story. The children will also be writing instructions to help Paddington make his infamous marmalade toast.

History – Great Inventions
In this History unit, the children will be investigating great inventions such as the first telephone invented by Alex Bell, the first four wheeled automobile invented by Karl Benz and the first successful powered aeroplane invented by the Wright Brothers. We will use sources to compare similarities and differences between these inventions from the past and present.
Science
Seasonal Change.
We will observe changes across all four seasons understanding how day length varies.

PSHE – How we can look after each other and the world?
We will discuss how kind and unkind behaviour can affect others. We will know how to look after and treat animals and why it is important to look after the word we live in. We will focus on change and how we grow up and adapt to different changes around us, in particular our transition to year 2.
RE –How should we care for the world and others and why does it matter?
We will identify a story or text that says God loves all people and think about how we care for others. We will then give examples of how and why Christians and Jews show care for the world.

We will be focusing on observing patterns and exploring a variety of textures to create our final piece of art in the style of the artist.
DT – Making a moving story book (Mechanisms)
We will explore slider mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a class moving storybook to present and share with the Nursery children.
Music – Reflect, Rewind and Replay!
This Unit of Work consolidates the learning that has occurred during the year. All the learning is focused around revisiting songs and musical activities, a context for the History of Music and the beginnings of the Language of Music.

The Jolly Postman – Janet & Allan Ahlberg
The children will read the fun, interactive story “The Jolly Postman” The Jolly Postman is off on another adventure as he delivers letters around fairy-tale land! The children will love opening the envelopes to read a letter from Goldilocks, a postcard addressed to a giant up a beanstalk... and even a note for the Big Bad Wolf! They will begin to develop their reading and writing skills through a variety of genres—including sequencing and retelling & letter/postcard writing.

History – The Greatest People – Who were the greatest explorers?
In this History unit, the children will be investigating explorers such as Neil Armstrong, Florence Nightingale and Christopher Columbus. We will be exploring their achievements and why they are significant individuals of the past. We will look at how these explorers contributed to international achievements.

Plants
We will be identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. We will describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

We will focus on knowing that people have different roles in the community to help keep everyone safe. We will recognise the jobs they do and how they help people, and learn who can help us in specific situations. We will understand how to respond safely to adults they don’t know and how to get help if there is an accident or if they re worried for themselves or others.
RE – Who is Jewish and how do they live? (Part 1)
We will be focusing on understanding what Jewish people believe in. We will begin to give examples of how Jewish people celebrate special times and know how Jewish people have ideas of thanking, praising and remembering the impact on Jewish people’s lives.

Spring 2

Old Bear – Jane Hissey
It’s time to bring Old Bear back to the playroom! Old Bear has been up in the attic for a very long time, but he hasn’t been forgotten. Bramwell Brown leads the toys on a rescue mission to bring their friend, Old Bear, safely back home.
We will be focusing on a setting description and sequencing and retelling the story. We will also look at acrostic poems.

Geography – Let’s Take a Trip Overseas!
The children will explore and start to understand continents, places that are near/far and we will look at the UK in more detail. We will gain an understanding of north, south, east and west. We will look at the surrounding oceans and how Mali, Timbuktu (Africa) is similar and different to London using human and physical geography.
Science
Animals including Humans
We will be covering carnivores, omnivores and herbivores and identifying and naming specific animals that eat these food types. We are looking at the structure of these animals.
Educational Visit
Peak Wildlife – we will be carrying out workshops looking at animals and their habitats and what they eat. This links to our Science topic Animals including Humans.

PSHE – What can we do with money?
We will understand what money is, how it comes in different forms and begin to learn how money is obtained. We will also recognise how people make choices about what to do with money and the difference between needs/wants. Know how to keep money safe and list some of the different ways of
doing this.
RE – Why does Easter matter to Christians?
We will be focusing on telling stories of Holy Week and Easter from the Bible and recognise that Incarnation and Salvation are part of a ‘big story’ of the Bible. We will look at how Christians show their beliefs about Jesus’ death and resurrection in church worship at Easter. Finally we will think, talk and ask questions about whether the story of
Easter only has something to say to Christians, or if it has anything to say to pupils about sadness, hope or heaven.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Pablo Picasso
We will be focusing on colour, drawing and printing skills.
DT – We are drink makers.
We will design our own smoothie and select simple tools, use them appropriately and begin to evaluate the taste.
Music – Round and Round
The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

Jack and the Beanstalk – Anna Milbourne
Jack and his mother are so poor that they don't have anything to eat. Their hope is fading, until Jack meets a strange little man with a handful of magic beans. But what will be the price that Jack must pay? They will begin to develop their reading and writing skills through a variety of genres—including letter writing and character descriptions.

Geography – Our Local Area – What is it like where we live?
This geography unit focuses on the immediate locality of where the children live. The children will develop locational knowledge based on the view from our school. They will build place vocabulary to define where they live, which is deepened through experiences and using maps. The children will identify Stoke-on-Trent and discuss the human and physical features. We will identify the key features of a local factory and the children will understand what is near and far away from school to gain a sense of place. We will look at aerial photographs to create a map of the school, as well as constructing symbols and a key for a map.
Science

We will identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, as well as identifying and naming a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

Year 1 will understand what being healthy means and who helps them to stay healthy (e.g. parent, dentist, doctor). They will know that
things people put into or onto their bodies can affect how they feel.
RE – Why does Christmas matter to Christians?
We will recognise the words of the Shema as a Jewish prayer and we will retell simply some stories used in Jewish celebrations
(e.g. Chanukah) We will give examples of how the stories used in celebrations (e.g. Shabbat, Chanukah) remind Jews about what
God is like.

We will be exploring the artist Pablo Picasso and observe his work using a variety of drawing tools. Year 1 will explore different textures
and observe patterns.
DT – Fruit and Vegetables
We will identify if a food is a fruit or a vegetable and where plants grow and which parts we eat. We will taste and compare fruit and
vegetables and to finally make a fruit and vegetable smoothie.
Music – In the Groove.
In The Groove is a song that was specially written for classroom use to teach children about different styles of music. This is a very
easy song to learn and has been arranged in six different styles; Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk. Each week we will
listen and learn a different style of In The Groove.

Gingerbread Man – Miriam Latimer
The cheeky little gingerbread man is having so much fun! He scurries away from Mr and Mrs Baker and all the hungry animals, but then he meets a crafty fox . . . Will the gingerbread man meet a sticky end? The children will read the fairy tale story “The Gingerbread Man” They will begin to develop their reading and writing skills through a variety of genres—including sequencing and retelling the events of the story. We will start to focus on time connectives (first, then, next, last).

Geography – UK Adventures – What do you know about the UK cities and seas?
This geography unit focuses on naming and locating the 4 countries of the United Kingdom. We will use maps and atlases to name capital cities and use aerial photographs to recognise UK landmarks. The children will name and locate the surrounding seas of the UK.

Everyday Materials
We will be distinguishing between an object and the material from what it has been made. Year 1 will describe the simple properties of a variety of everyday materials and they will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials.

Year 1 will know that family is one of the groups they belong to, and they will know about the different people in their family. We will understand how families are all different but share common features and what our families do to make us feel loved and cared for.
RE – Why does Christmas matter to Christians?
We will recognise that stories of Jesus’ life come from the Gospels and Year 1 will give a clear, simple account of the story of Jesus’ birth and why Jesus is important for Christians. We also give examples of ways in which Christians use the story of the Nativity to guide their beliefs and actions at Christmas.

We will be constructing a piece of art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy and learn how to carve, roll and pinch coils using a modelling media. We will also look at making simple joins and we will create patterns (using a variety of mediums)
DT – Constructing a dream house (structure)
We will look at individual preferences and requirements in designs of houses and we will make a stable structure of a dream house.
We will assemble the components of structures and the children will evaluate their projects and adapt their designs.
Music – Rhythm in the way we walk and Banana Rap.

What was it like when our grandparents were children?
The children will explore similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people their grandparents’ age. We will focus on different topics, including homes, toys, shops and schools.

We will be identifying, naming and labelling basic parts of the body. We will also focus on the different sense – sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell. We will look at which body part links to this specific sense.

PSHE – Relationships: what is the same and different about us?
We will look at the children’s likes and dislikes and discuss their interests and what they are good at. We will look at what makes them special and their strengths. The children will understand how their personal features or qualities are unique to them. We will recognise how the children are similar and different to each other and notice what they all have in common.
RE - Who do Christians say made the world?
Recognise how the ‘Creation’ story can fit with the ‘big story’ of the Bible and we will say what the creation story tells Christians about God, Creation and the world. We will learn how Christians say thank-you to God for Creation and we will discuss the links between the Creation story and our world now.
